Songwriting and composition naturally lead on from developing your musicianship and these skills become incredible tools for you to connect with your community through events and collaboration as well as communicate your thoughts and feelings. Songwriting is a unifying and therapeutic art form that will not just help you continue to develop your musicianship but became an incredible form of expression and creativity.

Learning the basics of recording your own music will give you a head start in the music industry, with the skills and knowledge to be able to record your own demos and communicate your vision when working with others in the studio.

​

I will help you develop your own songwriting style by discussing and practicing song structures, melodies, hooks, chord progressions, techniques of different genres, lyric writing and production. One the recording side, we'll look at, microphone placement, controlling noise bleed, setting up a session, DAWs and basic mixing techniques. 

 

You'll have the opportunity to explore many styles of songwriting as you develop your own personal style and tastes and an opportunity to play your songs live!

Songwriting and Recording lessons – what’s covered?

 

Basics of songwriting - study a variety of songs and genres to understand different structures, chord progressions, tempos, lyrical syncopations and lyrical themes across a variety of music

 

Basics of engineering – learn how to set up a recording session to record your ideas, demos and develop your production and engineering skills

Music Theory - explore the options available to you as you in different keys, scales, modes, chord progressions, rhythms, time signatures, feel or grooves, and how changing just one of these can completely change the song

​

Lyric writing - take a deep dive into different styles of lyric writing, how rhythm and syncopation change the feel of a song, and develop your own writing technique and personal style

 

Vocal and instrumental development – develop your instrumental musicianship alongside your songwriting to better communicate the messages your want to communicate with your voice and instrument

​

 Story telling – develop your ability to use music as a story telling device rather than making music just a medium for communicating. Understand how melody, chords, percussion, timbre and lyrics (and even silence!) all overlap and interweave to tell the story

​

Performance - grow your confidence, overall musicianship and ability to communicate your stories through live performance, learning how to let your songs create community

​

Collaboration – as you develop as a songwriter, we can look at opportunities to expand your skill sets and ability to work with others through collaborative songwriting...!

 

Students will get to perform up to 4 times a year!

Private 1 on 1 - $55/hour or, $35/half hour

Group 2 or more - $30/hour per student
